Weekly summary of Merger & Acquisition activity by South African companies

Pepkor shows what is possible in retail. Santova paints a worrying picture around SA trade. Altron is a mixed bag, while Redefine looks solid and MTN Rwanda adds to the positivity around Africa. Oceana had a better than expected finish to the year. Ethos Capital is moving closer to a full value unlock. Exxaro sold a business.

Ghost Bites (Astral Foods | Glencore | KAP | MTN Ghana)

Astral Foods had a stunning second half. Glencore has given tighter guidance for the full year. MTN Ghana had a strong quarter. KAP is trying to fix the economics of PG Bison's Cape-based forestry assets through a merger.

Ghost Bites (African Rainbow Minerals | Bell Equipment | Copper 360 | Dipula Properties | Putprop)

African Rainbow Minerals had a poor period. Bell Equipment's cash is the highlight. Copper 360 needs to raise R1.15 billion in equity and Dipula Properties successfully raised R559 million. Putprop released results.

Ghost Bites (Anglo American – Valterra Platinum | Aspen | Cashbuild | Discovery | Woolworths)

Woolworths takes the fight to Checkers. Discovery is showing excellent growth. Aspen had an awful year. Cashbuild is grinding away. Anglo American is selling the remaining shares in Valterra Platinum.

Ghost Bites (Afrimat | Bidcorp | Blue Label Telecoms | Curro | OUTsurance | Spur | Transpaco)

Curro is becoming a non-profit organisation - and it all makes perfect sense. OUTsurance is flying. Punters took profit on Blue Label after results. Afrimat and Transpaco are having a tough time. Bidcorp put in a dependable performance. Spur has a legal battle around a rib plant.

Ghost Bites (Accelerate Property Fund | AECI | Astoria | Brimstone | Glencore | Orion Minerals)

Glencore's production update shows a nasty drop in own sourced copper. AECI's turnaround is making good progress. Brimstone has been boosted by Sea Harvest. Accelerate Property Fund remains highly speculative. Orion Minerals released a quarterly report. Astoria is reducing its stake in OIH.

GHOST BITES (Choppies | Investec | Momentum | Shaftesbury | South Ocean Holdings)

Investec's UK business dragged down the group numbers. Shaftesbury is selling part of its Covent Garden stake. Momentum had an exceptional period. Choppies is doing well and South Ocean Holdings certainly isn't.
