South32

Who’s doing what this week in the South African M&A space?

Weekly summary of Merger & Acquisition activity by South African companies.

Ghost Bites (Remgro | South32)

South32 is getting out of the aluminium sector - and the market really likes the deal. Remgro has concluded the Mediclinic restructure.

Ghost Bites (Bytes | Canal+ | MAS | MTN | Octodec | Prosus | Spear REIT)

The market has gone cold on Prosus. MTN is the beneficiary of much better macroeconomics in Africa. Canal+ is inward listing on the JSE in June, but will they find support? Bytes Technology has a lot of work to do. In property, MAS is looking to offload some malls, while Spear REIT showed us how profitable buy-and-flip can be. Octodec's interim growth needs to be considered carefully.

Ghost Bites (Clientèle | Glencore | Merafe | MTN | Santova)

Dividend darling Clientèle wants to delist. Glencore is telling a bullish story after Q1, with MTN Nigeria also enjoying the current oil situation. Merafe should have an answer on the electricity tariffs by June. Santova clawed back a lot of lost ground in the second half of the year.

Ghost Bites (AECI | BHP | Capitec | Quilter | Spear REIT | South32 | Standard Bank | Stor-Age)

Capitec looks unstoppable. BHP and South32 released important production updates. Spear REIT is raising R1 billion. Standard Bank is enjoying double-digit growth. Quilter is doing well in 2026. Stor-Age announced a small deal. AECI found a whoopsie in the financials.

Ghost Bites (MTN | Optasia | South32 | Sun International)

MTN has over 300 million customers, a great growth story, and sadly a headache in Iran. Optasia's numbers are good, but what is this related party deal? Sun International has performed very well vs. the market. South32's Mozal Aluminium smelter is on care and maintenance.

Ghost Bites (AB InBev | Altron | Brimstone – Sea Harvest | British American Tobacco | South32 | Tongaat Hulett)

AB InBev's beer volumes are dropping, while British American Tobacco reminds us what an industry in decline looks like. South32 did well overall. Altron has flagged higher earnings. Brimstone has been boosted by Sea Harvest. The show is sadly over at Tongaat Hulett, with disastrous effects on the sugar value chain.

Ghost Bites (Clicks | Reinet | Sasol | South32 | Truworths)

Sasol had a huge day thanks to fuel volumes. Clicks and Truworths are perfect examples of how share prices respond based on expectations vs. results, not just the results themselves. South32 is on track this year. Reinet's NAV has dipped slightly.
