Weekly corporate finance activity by SA exchange-listed companies

Weekly summary of corporate finance activity by South African exchange listed companies

Ghost Bites (Assura – Primary Health Properties | MultiChoice | Naspers – Prosus | Pan African Resources)

Pan African Resources and Naspers/Prosus have both been winners for me this year, with latest numbers showing why. MultiChoice is in much pain. Assura is going ahead with the KKR/Stonepeak offer, not the Primary Health Properties merger.

GHOST BITES (AB InBev | enX | Gemfields | KAL | Lesaka | Mondi | Prosus – Naspers | Sappi)

AB InBev's numbers reflect consumer trends with alcohol. Mondi and Sappi reported very divergent numbers. Prosus - Naspers released a shareholder letter. Lesaka's numbers are growing. KAL was impacted by fuel prices. Gemfields is digging for better emeralds. enX misses loadshedding.

GHOST BITES (ArcelorMittal | Sabvest)

ArcelorMittal is still winding down the long steel business. Sabvest had a particularly good year in 2024, with NAV growth well above recent averages.

GHOST BITES (Absa – Standard Bank | Hulamin | MTN | RFG Holdings | Thungela)

There's a new sheriff in town at Absa - and it's Standard Bank's loss! MTN's gap between constant currency and reported earnings is still huge. RFG had trouble with pineapples. Hulamin had a poor year. Thungela released its 2024 results.

GHOST BITES (FirstRand | Grindrod | Lesaka Technologies | Lighthouse | MTN | Mustek | Sanlam)

FirstRand and Sanlam released strong financial services sector numbers. Lighthouse is acquiring a property in Madrid and Lesaka completed the Recharger acquisition. MTN Uganda released terrific numbers. Grindrod had a tough year. I still don't know why Novus wants Mustek.

GHOST BITES (AfroCentric | Aspen | Bidvest | Clientele | Italtile | JSE | MAS | Metrofile | MTN | Mustek | PPC |...

Aspen, MTN Ghana, PPC, RCL Foods and Santam all had particularly good stories to tell, with Clientele, JSE and MAS in the green as well. Bidvest was a mixed bag in 2024. Italtile pulled off a resilient performance in the end. AfroCentric released very poor numbers, with Metrofile and Mustek also deep in the red.

GHOST BITES (Copper 360 | Sappi | Sasol | Sea Harvest | Sirius Real Estate)

Sasol's earnings are down, which isn't a surprise. Sappi had a strong quarter but the next one won't be nearly as good. Sea Harvest's adjusted HEPS is slightly down. Sirius bought another property. Copper 360 has moved to hard rock.
